A facelift for the area between the Majorelle Gardens and Bab Doukkala!

Good news! The Bab Doukkala district is going to be transformed.

A major project is planned between the Bab Doukkala gate (West Medina) and the famous Majorelle Gardens. An opening of the old Medina towards the modern city, the Guéliz. A project that will be doubled by a green belt between the Palmeraie and the Majorelle Gardens.

We no longer present the Majorelle Gardens. But let’s do it anyway! The most visited place in Marrakech. The place where the opening of the Yves Saint Laurent Museum will soon be inaugurated. The mythical place where Jacques Majorelle, (painter at the beginning of the 19th century), was the first to create this fabulous garden and this villa in bright blue tones, today called “Majorelle blue”. Gardens that Pierre Bergé acquired, as well as the villa. Gardens that he finally gave to the city so that everyone could enjoy its beauty and magic.

Bab Doukkala is one of the gateways to the Medina, the great gate of the West. It is in the center of Marrakech and less than 10 minutes walk from the Majorelle Gardens. It naturally opens onto the new city. With this new project on 38 hectares developed, wooded, equipped with parks, gardens, shops and leisure areas, it will offer a magnificent living and walking space between the new city and the Medina.

Until now, a wholesale market and the bus station as well as a large tree-lined roundabout bordered the ramparts to the West of the Medina. A joyful, lively and colorful bazaar. Like the Marrakech of yesteryear. With this new project, 38 hectares (excuse the little!) will be converted into a living and well-being space. Gardens, paths, walks, cultural center (library, museums …), but also leisure center (pétanque grounds, children’s playgrounds, skate park …) and of course housing and shops.

It is the international group Sud, composed in particular of architects and urban planners, who won the competition launched by the Urban Municipality of Marrakech and here is their project presented:

The wholesale market has been moved to the outskirts of the city. The bus station should also be moved soon. The development project can then begin. We can’t wait for it to see the light of day!
